The Libertines hebben afgelopen maandagavond zonder zanger Pete Doherty opgetreden in de Amsterdamse Melkweg. Het optreden duurde amper een half uur, tweede man Carl Barat nam alle zangpartijen voor zijn rekening en een roadie nam Doherty's plaats in. Een deel van het publiek was 'not amused' en schreeuwde dat het zijn geld terug wilde. De reden voor de afwezigheid van de voorman van de Engelse band is niet officieel bekend gemaakt. Volgens berichten van roadies meldde hij zich niet voor het vertrek van de tourbus in Londen en bleef achter in Engeland. Doherty zelf liet een uitgebreide verklaring achter op een fansite. Maurits Westerik speelde maandag met zijn band Gem in het voorprogramma van The Libertines. Ook hij kreeg al snel door dat er iets niet helemaal goed zat bij de Britten. "We zagen toen we aankwamen de bui al een beetje hangen. Ze waren allemaal chagrijnig. Later hoorden we dat Pete niet was op komen dagen, want hij had weer een feestje gehad. Dat verpeste de sfeer een beetje. Op zich deed de rest van de band heel erg zijn best. Maar er was meer mis dan goed." Pete Doherty geeft zelf in een post op een fansite uitleg over waarom hij ontbrak. Op www.libertines.org schrijft hij het volgende: ".. so, the truth.. I've been trekking about the place taking refuge at various kindhearted souls abodes, and ... in fact writing, thinking, taking long walks and hammering the fuck out of my geetar with glory and despair in mind. Strangely warped and comforting the oddly morning, in this, the liberated heart… I'm so saddenned and confused by recent events, including two deaths in my family, and most peculiar politics occurring between myself the passport office, Banny, various stalkers and obsessives, death threats (including attempted murder on me and a lover, and armed escort from a club) Carlos' promise broken to play at gigs etc - the many things that make up the complete and final full stop inability at present to join any so-called Libertines gigs. My arms are currently razor bladed to shreds after a horrific night. I tried to leave a certain individuals house, at which point she locked herself in the bathroom. I kicked the door through in a panic to find her chopping herself up. She was hysterical and would not stop. In a blind rage I seized the blade and well, it is all rather disturbing the action I had to take to shut her up (ie show her two could play at that game) Very long night. The Libertines is (sorry, newcomers) an everchanging, swirling unpredictable monster of a band, and line-ups change as often as I do brogues... not every week but 'don't ever get too comfortable if you're not Carlos or Myself' basically is the rule of things. The boys are not playing Libertines gigs, they're doing their best not to get Banny sued for breaching European gig contracts… As for the fall out between Carl and myself... it is a usual tiff, we remain Libertines and best friends for all eternity, we can both assure you. Peter x" Doherty zou wel eens kunnen verwijzen naar een geheim optreden van The Libertines, onlangs in de Londense wijk Chelsea, waar Barat niet kwam opdagen. Het Engelse weekblad NME schrijft: "Pete's at the centre of it all and, after giving up the wait for Carl Barat, mumbles. "Thank you ladies and gentlemen."
